Theory is an American fashion label, based in New York, which creates high quality designer dresses, tops, jackets, knitwear, skirts, shorts, trousers and other clothes and accessories. The company, which was founded in 1997 by Andrew Rosen and Elie Tahari, designs clothes for women and men, although this article is only about the women's clothing range.

The company which now owns Theory, Link Theory Holdings, also owns the fashion house Helmut Lang, Proof, Rosner, PLS+T and Jean-Michel Cazabat.

Theory has signature retail stores and outlets in the US, and the brand is sold as a concession in major retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. In the UK, there is a Theory store in London and the brand is sold in Selfridges and online (see below).

Theory clothing has a reputation for creating dresses, jackets, knitwear and tops for women that are smart and sexy, with clean lines, combining easy on the eye silhouettes with a contemporary edge to take their place in the fashion arena.
