Stella McCartney is a British London born fashion designer, the daughter of Sir Paul McCartney. She designs a whole range of clothing including dresses, tops, jackets, trousers, skirts and shoes, together with accessories including bags, belts and sunglasses. Stella McCartney showed an interest in fashion from an early age, and after leaving (state) school she studied fashion design at Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design. She graduated in 1995, and her graduation collection was worn by the supermodels Naomi Campbell, Yasmin Le Bob and Kate Moss. The collection was extremely successful, and the designs were licensed to high end stores around the world including Joseph and Browns in the UK, and Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus in the US.
Stella McCartney follows her parents vegetarian beliefs and does not use fur or leather in her designs. However, she will use products of animal origin such as wool and silk.
Stella McCartney was appointed chief designer of Chloé two years after she graduated in 1997 and again her designs earned critical acclaim. In 2001, Stella McCartney left Chloé to create her own line for Gucci. The partnership have opened Stella McCartney boutiques in Mayfair in London, New York City, Los Angeles and Hong Kong.
Stella McCartney was awarded the VH1 Vogue Designer of the Year award in 2000. Friendly with Madonna, she designed the wedding dress for her marriage to Guy Ritchie. She has also designed clothes for tours by Madonna and Annie Lennox. However, she refused to design a wedding dress for Heather Mills when she married Paul McCartney. Stella McCartney also designs sports wear for Adidas and budget ranges for H&M in the UK and Target in Australia, and has released a line of bags for LeSportsac, which includes some trendy and colourful shoppers and bodybags.
Celebrities known to wear Stella McCartney are too numerous to mention, but include Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Katie Holmes, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Biel, Rihanna, Kate Hudson and Scarlett Johansson.
