The Polo label was established by Ralph Lauren in 1967, initially with a range of ties. However, in 1968, Ralph Lauren extended the range to include general menswear, including rugby shirts, polo shirts and knitwear.

"I never went to fashion school - I was a young guy who had some style," said Ralph Lauren. "I never imagined Polo would become what it is, I just followed my instincts.

"My customers were people who needed a change and didn't know how to do it - people who were looking for something new, but didn't like the transience of fashion."
